What is the difference between "laughable" and "funny"?

For example, is there any difference in meaning in the following sentence?

"The sun goes around the earth. In this age of science and technology, many people think that the story is [ laughable / funny ]."

Laughable is when you want to be insulting. A ridiculous idea that is being seriously advanced is laughable. A joke your friend tells is funny.

laughable is used to deride an idea, to speak in derision of something, to make fun of it.
