Hi,
My dictionary says this.

Dissertation
- A detailed discourse on a subject, especially one submitted in partial fulfillment of the requiremments of a doctorate.

Thesis
1. A proposition to be maintained or proved.
2. A dissertation, especially by a candidate for a degree.

Note that these words can be used outside the academic context of a university.
Best wishes, Clive

Wrong definition.
In US,  dissertation is a large part of the Ph.D degree in US.  Thesis is a small part of master degree.

A thesis statement can mean the central claim that is advanced in a research paper.  A dissertation would be the devlopment of the thesis in its entirety, including evidence, reasoning, theoretical framework, etc.

In United States universities, a "masters thesis" is the original peice of knowledge that is produced by the graduate, while at the doctoral level, it would be the "doctoral dissertation."

A thesis and dissertation can be used interchangeability, there are similarities and differences though. In the context of education/academe, thesis is a scholarly written document which is a required output for MS/MA students on the other had dissertation is a scholarly document which is a required output for PhD/Ed.D. In terms of scope, a dissertation requires higher data analysis and as much as possible itshould have atleast 5 variables (for quantitative dissertations) while a thesis can have less than 5 variables. Furthermore, in a thesis the student is required to test a theory that is already existing however, for dissertation students are encourage to establish their own theory in order to add to the body of knowledge.

That's completely wrong.  Whoever wrote this should remove it.  The subsequent explanation is more accurate.
