Is there a difference between a word for word translation and literal translation?

And what is called the translation that gives the general meaning in a more natural way?

1.  I'm not aware of a term for the difference between the two.  Just use the two terms.

2.  You might say 'liberal', 'free' or 'up-to-date/modern/vernacular'.
