I'm not sure you've learned what you really needed to know!
The nitty gritty of the OPs original question is that "from" is not happily followed by "our parents do".
I suspect this is because "from" must be followed by a noun or noun-phrase, and 'our parents do' does not qualify. ('than' can be followed by a verb)

Thank you, Woodcutter. Yes, I've indeed learned what I need to know. I know that FROM can be used only when the sentence is rephrased "We may want different things for ourselves FROM what our parents do." In that case, FROM is "happily" followed by a noun clause.
But, I do need to know what the noun phrase NITTY GRITTY means.

What about "different to"? Today I've read a piece of news about someone demanding a DNA test and I found this sentence:
"But Ben’s father Ian, 38, said: “You’ve only to take one look at Lita now to know it’s impossible. She is clearly different to my son.”

No, no, no! Not "different to"!
Maybe "indifferent to"?

As a child in school, I was taught "different
from
" - because you are going
from
something (i.e. it is not the same)
similar
to
- because you are going towards (ie something is like something else)

I'd be hard pressed to find an objection to 'different to'. It's by no means a new formation. And every 'from' is a 'to' in reverse...
