What is the difference between a dinner and a dinner party?

Thanks in advance!

You can have dinner alone.  If you are invited to 'a dinner' however, it is likely to be a dinner party.

'The question is,' said Humpty Dumpty, 'which is to be master-- that's all.'

A dinner could also be a very large scale affair, often organised and hosted by an official body.

To me a dinner party implies a group gathered in someone's home for a meal in the evening.
