Dear Sanz

I hope you can define prayer. Is it a prayer being recited by many in a religious organization? Or it is the speaking of a person with his heart to his God.

What do you want to achieve in this question? Would you want a MIRACLE to happen after you pray? Well, that would be magic! Let's say I want to change my past because I haven't had a good childhood. I felt my parents never loved me because they never showed me what love is. They thought when they work 10-12hrs a day to feed us and fill our needs that is LOVE. They never thought that hugging once in a while can fill once heart to the fullest and just being with us children, giving us time is an expression of LOVE. That why I want all my childhood  be erased. But i prayed hard during those times from 10-18yrs old. I would usually cry during my personal prayers. But I got no answer. I want to change my parents and change myself so that I can be a more acceptable person in their eyes. Still I got no answer. But one day, the answer came. I began to understand my past and put these things behind me.  I learned to speak what I want and feel. The past is dead let the dead bury their dead. I chose to love rather than stay in my hole of self-pity of being unloved and uncared. Suddenly, I felt really alive and full of life and love and then I began a new page in my life. Well, it was a transformation of my self and I think and I felt, God answered my  prayer.

Let me share with you this short story from the book "One Minute Wisdom" by Anthony de Mello- the title is Miracles-

A man traversed land and sea to check for himself the Master's extraordinary fame.

"What miracles has your Master worked?" he said to a disciple.

"Well, there are miracles and miracles. In your land it is regarded as a miracles if God does someone's will. In our country it is regarded as a miracle if someone does the will of God."

I hope you are enlightened by my message.

Hi Sheila, thanks for sharing your experience, however I think that God doesn't make difference how a person "prays" ... remember that disciples asked to Jesus "Lord, teach us how to pray" and then he taught them "The Lord Prayer".

To anonymous, why do you think" God doesn't make a difference how a person prays"? When a person prays there is usually a God or any sublime being? You are actually talking to him or just feeling his presence and when you do that, can't you consider that you are ONE WITH HIM? Jesus taught us how to pray the Lord's Prayer. It was a guide for us how to pray. That is we have to thank God for all his goodness to us, we then ask him to accept His Will (not out will) to accept our destiny in life whether it be good or bad,  we ask him for our needs (not our wants), then we admit our failures in life and accept others mistakes too(whether they killed other people or our very own relatives), then we ask him to lead not into sin or temptation or doing bad things. Amen. It is a wonderful prayer, don't you think  God answered the prayer He taught us through his Son? I think He is answering it everytime we pray it, and feel the lightness of the heart after praying. If you haven't felt it--learn how to feel the prayer.

I am born a Roman Catholic. We are baptized as early as possible. We don't even know how we accepted Jesus, but with the presence of our parents and Godparents we were baptized as Christians. So I know by heart the Lord's Prayer and with my not so good childhood I depended much on the Lord's Prayer and the Holy Rosary which we pray at 6 o'clock. But when I reached High School I questioned my faith, I do not feel anymore the real essence of the prayers because they are repetitions, my feelings grow numb when I recite them. Then, I thought what if I change religion? Will my spirituality increase? I was in the verge of changing my religion because during those times the Born Again Christians who were Protestants were abundant. They were convincing, but my friend lend me a book by Anthony DeMello entitled The Song of the Bird, from that book I learned that contemplation is a very important part in praying and at that time I wish I was a Buddhist but they don't have a God whom they can attribute to all of the wonder of this world, a God to which our END is and now I am happy I am a Catholic  and day by day, I learn to understand my religion and in time as I stated in my last postcript that my prayers were answered thru self transformation.
