Dear Pieanne,

I was  researching Doctor Livingstone and I needed to know who said, "Doctor Livingstone, I presume?"  I went to Google and typed in the phrase, I found a website, clicked on it and it went straight to your post. When I finally read through it the part that I didn't get was when you said, "journalist Stanley(John Rowlands)." Does that mean that the journalist had 2 seperate names or that that was his nickname?

As to your questions you had on your post:

The qoute is just simply asking for Doctor Livingstone, which then became this big thing.

Since Stanley did find Doctor Livingstone, I must think that it was not on accident, but meant to be.

You can e-mail me at Email (Remove 'FILTER' from address)

Thanks a lot.

                  Sincerely,

                                             Kara

Hi, Guest!

I don't really know the story, but yes, Stanley did go looking for Mr. Livingstone. But the fact that Dr. L. could have been about anywhere in Africa can make it an unexpected encounter!

Doctor Livingstone, I presume?

In fact, as a journalist, he wasn't very good. The correct word is "assume". He should have said "Doctor Livingstone, I assume?"

Hi,

Well, I'd say 'presume' is fine in this quotation.

The relevant definitions in my dictionary are:

Presume - suppose to be true, take for granted.

Assume - accept as being true , without proof, for the purpose of argument or action.

Best wishes,

Clive
