What does MEANT mean in the followin sentences.
1. The location of its(Italy) ports meant the journey to the Middle East was not too long.
2. Wealth from trade meant people with liesure and money to spend could become educated.

The location created/allowed a situation so that the journey was not long.
The wealth created the situation/led to the fact that people could become better educated.
