Does the pseudonym that you use on English language fora affect the way you are treated?

"In an experiment that I conducted some time ago I found that many instances of stylistic and idiomatic oddities that I had deliberately introduced in a piece of writing were noted and corrected by unknown referee readers, but exactly similar errors were untouched when I used an Anglo-Saxon-sounding pseudonym!"

Hume said that if we had perfect or complete descriptive knowledge of reality, we could not, by reasoning, derive a single valid "ought".

Hi milky,

You asked:

Yes, I think it does. What some people consider even more important, though, is your post rank, location, and whether or not you're a proficient speaker/trusted user/moderator/administrator. What do you think, milky?

Personally, I see no reason for labels used on these forums. Often, one can no more trust someone with the label "Forum Guru" than one can "Frequent Poster". Location is an odd one. In general, it seems that if one's location is the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia or New Zealand, it is assumed that one is a native speaker and therefore to be trusted regarding usage. If one is elsewhere, one may be taken for a non-native speaker and therefore receive a different initial reaction. I se no point in both stating one's location or having labels such as "Forum Guru".

Hi milky,

What about labels such as 'moderator' and 'proficient speaker'? Do you think the system works?

"Moderator" is fine, but "Proficient User" leaves me wondering.

Because I wonder why it is necessary to advertise such.
