Hi David,

Just so you know, you can search Google by typing in things like "taken for a ride" idiom

Taken for a ride means someone has fooled you or cheated you, perhaps taken money from you in the process.

turns out simply means how a situation resolves itself, or how a product is. I'm making cookies, but I'm trying a new recipe; I'll let you know how they turn out.  That means whether they are good, etc. I'm asking my boss for a raise today; I'll let you know how it turns out. That means, whether I am successful.

pick out  means select, choose.

pick up  has a number of meanings. Give some context.

Mr Grammar Geek is actually a woman Wink [;)]

I would add another meaning of 'turn out' which is 'to prove' or 'be found to be' (ouch, I don't really like the latter formulation Tongue Tied [:S])
I didn't believe it at first, but finally it turned out to be true. (=proved to be true)
