Hello everybody,

I'm writing a small essay for a school assignment and was having it corrected by a good friend. This has led to an enormous discussion about how to write the following 2 sentences:
My questions are probably very simple but keep in mind I'm not a native english speaker Wink [;)]

Sentence 1:

This was the sentence which kept lingering in my parents’ heads after their visit to the gynaecologist

Or

This was the sentence which kept lingering in  my parents's  heads after their visit to the gynaecologist

Or (head instead of heads)

This was the sentence which kept lingering in my parents’ head after their visit to the gynaecologist

Sentence 2:

Now, my parents would discover  how having twins can change someone's life.

Or

Now, my parents would discover how having twins could change someone's life.

Many many thanks!

Vicky

Hi Vicky,

Sentence 1:

This was the sentence which kept lingering in my parents’ heads after their visit to the gynaecologist Yes

Or

This was the sentence which kept lingering in  my parents's  heads after their visit to the gynaecologist No

Or (head instead of heads) Say 'heads'

This was the sentence which kept lingering in my parents’ head after their visit to the gynaecologist

Sentence 2:

Now, my parents would discover  how having twins can change someone's life.

Or

Now, my parents would discover how having twins could change someone's life.

You can say it either way. 'Could' makes the change seem more hypothetical/theoretical, 'can' makes it seem more practical/factual/likely.

In such sentences, you'll often hear the combinations 'will/can', and 'would/could'.

Best wishes, Clive

G'day Anon,

Sentence 1.

Parents' heads is the correct construction.

Parents' indicates plurality.

Sentence 2.

I can see no difference.
