What does it mean?

E.g.: Star Mary-Louise Parker is surely due for some laudatory ink for her performance as a cul-de-sac mom who turns to selling marijuana in her gated community ("Agrestic, California") to pay the bills (in cash) after her husband drops dead while jogging with their 8-year-old son

He probably had a heart attack while running, which killed him instantly, dropping him to the ground.  The term 'drops dead' is often used to indicate sudden, unexpected death.  It's also used jokingly, or angrily, when you are annoyed by someone behaving obnoxiously to you.  You tell them to 'drop dead'...or a milder form, 'get lost'.
