You do not need to double the last consonant of such verbs before adding -ed or -ing.

They are almost always one-syllable words (hill, full, sill, roll, call), less often compounds of two one-syllable words (nightfall), rarely anything other than those.

The double-s is ubiquitous.  Most adjectives can be turned into nouns by adding "-ness."


bashfulness, consciousness, liveliness, etc.


also, authoress, agribusiness, (just for fun)
