Hello!

I am a student of English, preparing myself for an exam and I couldn't find the meanings of the following proverbs in the dictionary:

-it takes one to no one/set a thief to catch a thief

-do as I say,not as I do

-a hedge between keeps friendship green

-an old poacher makes the best keeper

Thank you for your help Smile [:)]

Hi Mateja!

I know only one of  these proverbs : "it takes one to no one/set a thief to catch a thief"

and for me it means that you have to think in the same way of a thief to catch a thief and so you are similar at him (in your innerside).

-it takes one to no one/set a thief to catch a thief  It takes one to know one - two entities who have similar interests recognise that they have something in common.

-do as I say,not as I do  Follow my orders, don't imitate my actions

-a hedge between keeps friendship green  Keeping your distance will prevent breakdowns in relationships. (In England, where housing is close together, having a fence on the boundary between them means less chance of encroachment and disagreement)

-an old poacher makes the best keeper related to "set a thief to catch a thief" - someone who is an expert in wrongdoing will always know what action a wrongdoer will take.

Thank you for your help Smile [:)]

Thanks a lot Feebs!!!

Would it be possible to give me also a couple of sentences using these proverbs in them?

Proverbs aren't quite like idioms. They stand on their own. You don't really use them in a sentence.
