Epidemiology is the study of the distribution of disease, health problems etc. and their determinants or causative agents.
A cohort a group of people (or animals) identified by a common characteristic, which are studied over a period of time as part of a scientific or medical investigation. e.g. smokers, young women, menopausal women, diabetics etc.
In an epidemiological study, the group under study (e.g smokers) is studied over a period of time, and their health / disease outcome compared with a separate group who do not possess the characteristic. (In this example, a group of smokers would be compared with a group of non-smokers over a specified period of time)
