The exercise is :

For question 1-8 below,complete the second sentence with three or eight words so that it has a similar meaning to the first sentence,using the word given.Do not change the word given

1.The amjor will give a prize to the best architect. Word- presented

The best architect will be presented by the major.  In Bold is the gap - this mean that there I put the words whicht I think must be put.

2.This year the police have arrested more drivers than usual for speeding.The word is "number"

This year an a great number of drivers have been arrested for speeding. I don't know the phrase with "an" and "number" so I decided to put a great number.

3.The sea is gradually eroding the cliff face in this area. Word - worn

The cliff face in this area is being worn away by the sea.

4. Somking is to be totally banned from next month. Word - takes

A ...................................... from next month

I have no idea !

5.Refusal to obey the local laws about noise could lead to your arrest. Word -for

You could be arrested for breaking the local laws about noise.

6. They insisted that my brother should complete all application forms again. Word made

My brother .........................in all the application forms again.

No idea !

7.The completion of the project should have taken place last month. Word - completed

The project was completed by last month.

8. A quick solution to the housing problem is an urgent priority. Word -needs

This year an a great number of drivers have been arrested for speeding. I don't know the phrase with "an" and "number" so I decided to put a great number. A greater number not a great number. The emphasis is on the increase not the overall total.

The cliff face in this area is being worn away by the sea. yes.

4. Somking is to be totally banned from next month. Word - takes

The housing problem needs a quick solution as soon as possible. quick and as soon as possible are redundant.

In the exercise as possible is necessary.

The project was completed by last month. should doesn't mnean it was.

8. It doesn't say you have to use as soon as possible. Or you could take out 'quick'. You really can't use both in the same sentence.

7. Still not quite right. 'Should be' is future. 'Should have been' is past.

As quick as possible is not grammatical. Stick to as soon as possible or as quickly as possible.

7. You are still a bit confused here. Look at the original again.

The completion of the project should have taken place last month. Word - completed

It is saying that the completion was scheduled for last month but the 'should' shows us that it wasn't finished on time. The project is not yet completed. It is late.

"The project should have been completed last month."
