how is "essay" usually pronounced in the US?

I say EH-say, stress on EH...

As a noun in its usual sense, we pronounce it as you suggested / 0es.eI/ in Western Canada. If it means attempt or used as a verb, the stress is on the 2nd syllable.

So do I -- just like the names of the two letters S-A, stress on S.  Never heard it any other way.
