What does it mean ''to come online''?

When an oil well first starts pumping oil ino the pipes feeding it into storage tanks or transporter tanks, the oil goes into the 'lines' so it 'comes online'.

The terminology then passed into common use for any chemical plant so when it first passes the expected product through the pipes to storage or transport, it 'comes online'.

The terminlogy may have originated in the first place with the telephone lines, cables, which crossed the USA in the 19th century.
