International events are being held to mark Holocaust Memorial Day in memory of the six million Jews and other victims of the Nazi death camps.

Most of the commemorations take place on 27 January - the date on which the Auschwitz concentration camp was liberated by the Soviets in 1945.

Victims of more recent atrocities are also being remembered.

On the eve of the memorial, the UN General Assembly on Friday adopted a resolution condemning Holocaust denial.

The resolution, proposed by the United States and co-sponsored by more than 100 countries, says "ignoring the historical fact of these terrible events increase(s) the risk they will be repeated".

The resolution does not mention any particular country, but diplomats said it was aimed at Iran, which has cast doubt on the Nazi genocide of Jews during World War ll.

Why is it necessary to write ' increase(s) ' here?

The word 'events' is a plural noun. So it should be 'increase' here.

"Increases" refers to the act of ignoring.

"ignoring the historical fact of these terrible events increase(s) the risk they will be repeated"

Being late makes me mad.
Ignoring me makes me sad.

"Ignoring" is the subject, and takes the singular verb, increases. It's easy, when you have a complex noun phrase, to lose track of what the original subject was. But don't make the mistake of taking the noun closest to the verb ("events") and making the noun agree with that.

I thought you had put them there. Perhaps the original quote didn't have the s, and the editor wanted to correct it? Very curious.

No, it is in the original.

As I couldn't fathom out the additional 's' , I posted to the forum.

Yes, Marius the word 'ignoring' is singular so it should be 'increases'.
My question is why is it necessary to write the parenthesis.

It seems that the BBC have read what you posted on the forum, Rex, and have made the correction!
