I just had to see what could possibly have caused 26,598 hits for this thread. I thought Mr M must have posted a bunch of nudes or something. Could that really be possible; 26,598 !!!

I was wondering would "His face was pale" be a metaphor??
Mister Micawber  +  77141 Mon, 28 Feb 05 04:49 AM

No. 'Pale' is just a predicate adjective modifying 'face'.

Earlier in this thread (post #29796), there is a simile: 'her face was (as) pale as the moon'.

To convert this into a metaphor, we must rid ourselves of any 'like's and 'as's:

'Her face, a gibbous moon pale and glowering, unsettled me.'

ANY FURTHER POSTERS SHOULD READ THIS THREAD CAREFULLY FROM THE BEGINNING, AS IT CONTAINS SEVERAL DEFINITIONS AND EXAMPLES OF SIMILES AND METAPHORS.

I need 5 metaphors. What role does language and language diversity play in the critical thinking process. How does language empower o limit the expression of our thoughts. What is the role of critical thinking in persuasion.

It seems to me there are a lot of "oriental" visitors in here. (I'm totally "occidental", a Belgian living in France, and many posts come from China and other countries in the East),
so I find it would be interresting to compare metaphors from the East and from the West... ?

A metaphor is "a figure of speech in which a word or phrase literally denoting one kind of object or idea is used in place of another to suggest a likeness or analogy between them" (Websters)

if you read the whole thread, you will find definitions and metaphors
