"If fear of abandonment contributed to a decibel level that rivalled an industrial buzz saw, his loneliness displayed an awesome existential purity."

I take it this is some philosophical term. Could you, please, rephrase or explain? Or even better, simplify? Smile [:)]

This book is killing me with its "unsubstantiated rubbish", "existential purity", "prissy dabbling" etc. I deeply appreciate your help! Thank you all!

If this is NOT the philosophical term:

his loneliness displayed an awesome purity related to his own existence
his loneliness displayed an awesome purity in his own experience of existence/life

For the philosophical term, go to Wikipedia, etc.

I'm not sure which is used here.

Existential purity sounds like a flash way of saying 'innocence'.

This looks like a comparison.

If fear of abandonment contributed to a decibel level that rivalled an industrial buzz saw

This sets up the proposition that fear of abandonment makes as much noise as an industrial buzz say.

his loneliness displayed an awesome existential purity.

The denoument is that his loneliness is pure.

This gobbedygook written by a psuedo psychologist to try, very unsuccessfully, to sound erudite.  It is a version of The Peter Principle where a person's flaws are revealed if they are promoted to one position beyond their capabilities.

"The denoument is that his loneliness is pure."

Now it's clear!

Thank you both for your time and help!
