"Experience" is in the singular, so it's "was".

If I want to talk about my first experiences.............

The verb is 'are' .

In the original question the word has the countable nature; so you could write the plural.

If you want to talk about skills, this is different.

I have some experience of networking. I can't say that I have experiences of networking
