Did he explain himself?

What's the meaning of "himself" in the sentence above? I believe it has the same meaning as "Did he explain?" If not, could you please provide a context/example to distinguish them.

"Did he himself explain?"

With that word order, you want to know whether he, not someone else, explained something.  If the topic of the explanation is already understood from the context, it is sometimes omitted.
