Hello,

Can I say "The students feigned that they were interested, but I could see that they weren't."?

It sounds odd. Does "feign" always appear with negative meaning?

Thank you!

not necessarily. Think of it like faking or pretending. The girls feigned disappointment when in reality they were relieved that they didn't have to visit their mean old uncle.
