there are many kinds of fish.

'fish' refers to certain animals that live in the water. It has plural form: fish (same)
'fish' also means species of fish, with fishes as plural.

Can the same logic apply to food and foods?

Fruits and vegetables are food.

Fruits and vegetables are foods.
