I was taught that fish(pl) means many fish of the same species, and fishes means many fishes of different species. Correct me if I'm wrong.

'Fishes' is used when you want to emphasise the different types of fish you've caught.

Hi Anon

Using the word 'fish' as a plural just means 'many fish' -- it could be just one species or many different species.  Saying 'a lot of fish' is like saying 'a lot of birds' or 'a lot of animals' -- there is simply no differentiation made.

The word 'fishes' is used when you differentiate between species.
