The road sign says that Lake Louise is five kilometers ahead.

I suspect if I could write in front or in the front to replace ahead. If not, what are the alternatives? Thanks.

This seems perfectly natural to me.  I wouldn't replace it; your other two options are very awkward.  (And it's worth the 5 kilometers to get there!)
