Each person has his/her own way to learn English. You can learn from books, from watching TV, from taking classes...but the bottom line is: you have to be patient. For me, the best way to learn English is to memorize. It sounds funny but that's the truth. Babies learn how to speak by imitating what people around them say. And I have done the same thing during the last few years.

When native English speakers knew that I was in the States for just about 3 years, had not known English before coming to the country, they were all surprise. Even though I have accent speaking English, I use the English language effectively. Don't get me wrong here. I am not trying to show off that I am good at English, but my key to success is MEMORIZING. I started with simple English phrases, sentenses by memorizing them, writing them down frequently, saying them out loud, even to myself. All what I have to do later is to use them, not even thinking about it, when appropriate. I did not even recognize how much I'd improved, not until did my American friend told me that she was impressed.

So, If you have not figured out a good way for you to use the English language effectively yet, TAKE MY ADVICE: MEMORIZING, PRACTICING.... Again, that has been my key to success.

hi,

well it's exactly the problem of many people.

these are the techniques which i applied myself:

stand before a full length mirror and speak in front of it or read aloud,

or U can imagine that  there's another person in the mirror and U r talking to it.

at first U may feel awkward or hesitate, gradually U'll make it through.

and:

when U r alone, imagine talking to a native english speaker and try to speak english with her,or U may iamgine Ur familiar person and talk silently in Ur mind,

and:

read aloud, speak like americans as U say U r taking toefl classes,

concerntrate Urself in most of the sound which  most of non-english speaker do mistake, specially  south asian.

i'll be pleased to help  U out,U can send me emails at yahoo/ hotmail at theeasternthunder

hope U'll find it helpful.

regards,

saw rose

I think the best way to learn English is to talk and talk, if possible speak with a native English speaker or it doesn't need to be a native, a fluent English speaker will do.  And once you started doing it, try to feel what you are doing.  Do it by heart because that way you can achieve your goal.   I am also an struggling English learner but I always tell myself that I can do it if we all just do it with passion.  My only problem is that whenever I am surrounded by native English speakers, I feel so intimidated and I begin to mumble so I guess this is not helping me.  I think I really have to start from the basic and do it slowly.  Probably, I'll do a lot of reading, watch English movies with captions, talk to the phone (in English of course), chat with another English learner and maybe we could help each other.  Determination is the key to our success so let's join together and help each other to succeed and achieve our goals.    Have a nice day!

Interesting. I too think you should practice.

Do you know, there is a program called "Skype". It allows you to call ANY place in the world for free, as long as you want. So why aren't you trying that: Download the program (www.skype.com) get a headphone and call anybody in the US or in the UK. Try to talk with them. A lot of the people who have skype just love it to talk with strange people. You can tell them about your country, your life... whatever. Make sure you let them know that they have to correct you.

Good Luck Jake
