My English learning comrade, here is where it’s tricky and rules don’t seem to follow the traditions.
It’s all in the contexts. When you are talking, or even infer things or entity in plural, then use the plural form as “variety of foods/ fruits”
Mango is my favorite fruit–singular
Fruits of different colors contain different nutrients needed for a healthy diet
