A "Food Guide Pyramid" is a guide for healthy eating.
The pyramid shape shows the proportions of various food groups that we all need in our diet. Food groups at the bottom of the pyramid are to be eaten more than food groups nearer the top.
So now we can see if our diets are healthy or not.
Bread, cereal , rice and other grains are a good source of carbohydrates . They give us the basic energy we need for our active lives.
Vegetables provide vitamin A and C, carbohydrates and fibre. They are needed to help us fight many diseases, including cancer.
Fruit also supplies vitamin A and C, and minerals, which keep our skin, eyes and gums healthy.
Milk, cheese and yoghurt — the dairy group — provide protein, calcium and vitamin D. These are all needed for strong bones, teeth and muscles.
Meat, fish, eggs and nuts supply protein, iron, vitamin B and minerals for strong muscles and healthy blood.
But what about the snack food that we all enjoy, like chocolate and candies ? Small amounts of candy, soft drinks , and other sweets can be eaten occasionally if you fill up on food from the basic food groups first. But remember, this type of food should not be eaten every day. Try snacking on food that come from each of the different food groups, especially fruit.
