I have recently had a sort of an argument with one of my fellow colleagues regarding the layout of the opinion essay. I have found on the internet ( www.writefix.com) some nice layouts which I found very easy to use and attract my students. The argument was about the introduction which in my colleague's opinion should not contain the thesis in the following form: " In this essay, I will discuss some arguments for and against...." or "This essay will describe some of the problems involved with......"

I would like to know if such a way of writing a thesis  in an opinion essay is totally wrong or it is just a question of choice in what concerns the layout.

thank you very much ,

It is a common approach by beginning writers, and I don't think that it is downright wrong; but a good writer should be able to avoid the weak approach of stating outright 'I am going to write about...'.  Instead, s/he he should be able to make it clear without that crutch-- with a clear and dynamic writing style-- what the thesis or topic will be.

'The question is,' said Humpty Dumpty, 'which is to be master-- that's all.'
