A reader of the community newsletter I edit has objected violently to a regular (satirical) columnist's use of this denomination for one of our councillors. Does anyone know when, why and in what context it was first used publicly? None of the Google quotes I could find looked at all original.

Jeffrey Archer's wife Mary was famously described as "fragrant" by a besotted High Court judge who seemed to think that she therefore smelled truthful. Whether that has any relevance or not, I have no idea!
