The following line is from the package of a game software Age of Empires III. Would you like to tell me what the word franchise means in such a situation? Thank you.

The makers of the awar-winning Age of Empires franchise bring your the third installment of the highly acclaimed series.

Series, or collection of sequels. A game or movie that has many sequels can be called a franchise. E.g. James Bond, Friday the 13th.

A franchise is: products sold or services given by permission of and under the name of a commercial enterprise

So with Star Wars and Harry Potter, the franchises include the toys, games, clothes - anything with the Star Wars or Harry Potter marque attached to them. The same applies to the Age of Empires - the development of commercial aspect of the series is franchised to the "makers".
