I don't know if Frisian had some influence in the forming of Old English and Yes you are right, the language isn't spoken much. That why I'm proud to say I'm from Frisian. (Fryslân).

Some words do indeed look like English words. Cheese for example is in my language Tsiis. Eventhough you don't write it the same, you do pronounce it almost the same.

I'm impressed about your knowledge the Dutch-language. Do you remember "Hoe gaat het ermee?" ("How do you do?")Smile [:)]

I do believe it would be tricky to learn the language but the place I'll bet is breath taking.

Ohhh, Molly, I had forgotten about that, but now you've refreshed my memory. I think I'm going to take my book again and have a look at it! I was studying about the forming of Old English at the time I studied Dutch, so I could make some comparisons between the two languages (on a vocabulary basis). One day I came across the word "bergen" in Dutch, and I knew that it meant "mountains" because this was the meaning a similar word had in Old English. It's fantastic how languages interact, at least for meSmile [:)]

I have a question though. Do people in Fryslân speak any other language? I've met some Dutch people and they seem to have a good command of English. I was wondering if you speak English as a second language there or just study it at school as we Spanish people do.

In most parts of The Netherlands, they speak only Dutch. It could be in a dialect but never the less, Dutch.

In Fryslân, the real Frisian people speak Frysk and Dutch. Because a lot of people from other provinces came to Fryslân, not everyone does speak Frysk. (Pitty) :s

For the sake of a good communication, it's important to understand eachother so everyone can speak Dutch.Smile [:)]

We all learn English at school. To earn your diploma you have to pass the exams for Dutch and English. It's indeed the second language although we don't speak it often when we don't have to go to school anymore.

Hi Catbird and friends,
I am a bit lonely too :( I am in Australia, so it is sunny and warm, but I am by myself studying. But guess what I'm studying? Attitudes towards FrisianSmile [:)]
Want to tell me about Frisian? You know it's orthograpically the closest language to English?
How cool is that?
