Hello Catbird, welcome to the forums. You can tell us about you and have fun here!

Molly, I've always wanted to visit The Netherlands. I even studied a short course of Dutch language. Our teacher was from Belgium, though, and she said that the language varies slightly from one place to the other, is that true?

Amsterdam is a big city, not as big as Shanghai but for my standards : big. :p
I'm not a city-girl. I'm from a small village from Fryslân. Born and raised there.

Fryslân is the province in the North of The Netherlands just below the little islands. I'm proud to be a Frys.Smile [:)] I love the language and the people. Most people think that we are stubborn but when you realy get to know us, we are not so bad. (a)

Lot's of people visit Fryslân during their holiday. We have many lakes and lots of cycle tracks. It's realy a nice place to be.Movie [~]

Novalee, you're daring to study Dutch.Smile [:)] Most Dutch-people find it hard to learn.
Your teacher is right, every province has his own dialect. Sounds a lot like Dutch but if you're not from the area it's sometimes hard to understand what they are saying.

In the areas close to Germany, the dialect sounds a little bit German. Dutch-German so to speak.

Fryslân has it's own LANGUAGE (y) totaly different from Dutch and with many dialects of it. Here in Fryslân we also speak Dutch ofcourse.

Well, Molly, to tell you the truth, I loved learning Dutch, the little bit I learnt at least. I'm proud to tell you that I was the second best student in the class, according to the teacher. Unfortunatly, that semester was my last one at University, so I couldn't go on studying it.
When you say Fryslân, do you mean Frisian? I studied that Old Frisian had some influence in the forming of Old English, but I thought it wasn't much spoken nowadays :s
I especially remember "hoe laat is het?" ("What time is it?") because I spent one very long evening learning how to say the time in Dutch. It was very complicated for me. But now I've forgotten almost everything I learnt, which is a pity, :(
Ohhh! I wish I could spend a holiday in Fryslân, it seems to be a beautiful placeWink [;)]
