maeve, i know people in singapore and some countries of africa who could speak perfect straight english but they still use singlish or pidgin when talking with their friends or relatives. i think it helps them create a distinguished identity. english is a foreign language but singlish/taglish/manglish/etc is not. i personally love this phenomenon of mixed english - a proof that despite globalization etc, our world remains authentic, local, distinctive

Hello, I'm a teacher from Chile.  Your country is so far away from my country.  I wonder what it is like where you live.  I live in Osorno, a fairly small city south of Chile.  It's cold and rainy in winter and quite warm in summer.  Springs are just lovely.  What's the weather like where you live?

Hope to hear from you soon.

There was an article written about recognition of different version of english by the Oxford. I can't recall the title and the date of the article. Its about the usage of some local dialet after the proper english such as "I don't know-lah", "Please don't tell me that you are not involve-lah" etc. If I not mistaken, the lah recognition is been awarded to the Singaporeans.

hi everyone ^^ im just back from a long holiday in malaysia, singapore and thailand ... finally i did go travelling again after quite a while. it's been fantastic. thailand was especially hillarious. nobody seemed to be able to speak english there (or maybe coz i met all the wrong people!!!) and as the result i had to pay a fortune for the taxi from airport to bangkok, i took the wrong bus to pattaya, and waited for the airport shuttle for hours in vain (and finally took taxi). but of course the food was great and all the temples i visited were all beautiful and the sky train is especially handy to go around the city
