Hello, I'm from Indonesia and I teach English. My students are various, from very young children (in first grade of primary school) to university students to old ladies who plan to go on a holiday to english-speaking countries. I enjoy writing and travelling myself. My dream is to travel around the world one day and write a book about it. I would like to meet new friends from all over the world who would share stories about their life and countries. Who knows that I might visit you on my global trip? My email: . Looking forward to hear from every one =)

Hi, I have signed up this web site and I'M looking for people willing to practise English. It's very nice to find an English teacher. I can tell about my culture and country in return for practising English ![Smile [:)]](/emoticons/emotion-1.gif)

I'm from Turkey. I'm a university student and I'm studying in Sociology. English is very important for me because all lessons i'm going to study throughout my education are in English and unless I improve my English, i will fail and maybe i will be dismissed university :( If you want, you can add my MSN address to your list.
CSI, we met in MSN. I hope we will have the opportunity of talking.

when i was studying in london a few years ago, one of my good friends was from from turkey. she worked as au-pair while attending an english school. and she is a very lovely person. do universities in turkey use english as the first language? what's your native language?
uykusuz,
4 yr 277 days ago
My native language is Turkish. As for universities, in last decades some departments started to use foreign languages such as English, German, French as education language. Especially some universities such as Bosphorus University and Middle East Technical University give lessons only in English. However in my university only my department and some departments such as business administration, political science, economics and so on give education in English. I'm not sure it will be useful for us. We not use english but learn our lessons but i feel like i won't succeed both of them :(

from the way you express yourself in your writing, your english seems ok for me. good, indeed. why do you feel like you'll fail? is the problem with your listening or speaking or writing?
uykusuz,
4 yr 277 days ago
I can say there is a problem about all of them. When I watch BBC or CNN or CNBC-E (Turkish channel which shows english tv series) I can't understand what men say. Speaking is a disaster for me. I wish I could speak like I write here. Also it's in effect for writing. I make up very simple sentences.
Due to these reasons im worried but i hope i will improve myself until the education year will start. I read english newspapers and novels, i signed up here and had the opportunity of using my english. If i get used to watching english channels much more, my problem will be solved ![Smile [:)]](/emoticons/emotion-1.gif)

sometimes it's also hard for me to understand each word said on BBC or CNN or movies. maybe it's the accent or simply because they talk about things i dont understand very well. if that happens, i just try to catch the main point. even when i watch dvd today, i tend to put on the subtitles ... a bad habit i cant seem to leave
uykusuz,
4 yr 277 days ago
Yes, even you force yourself not to look at subtitles, you do it unawarenessly. This became a habit, you cant stop ![Smile [:)]](/emoticons/emotion-1.gif) TRT Int (Turkish government channel) sometimes shows Turkish tv series with english or german subtitle. When I watch them, I notice that I'm looking at subtitles even I don't understand ![Smile [:)]](/emoticons/emotion-1.gif) ))

that's so true. well, so im not the only one doing that ![Wink [;)]](/emoticons/emotion-5.gif) . somehow, listening seems to be much more difficult that reading. when i first went to london, i avoided telephone conversation because i was scared i wouldnt understand what people said on the other line and they wouldnt understand me as well. when i made appointment with doctor, i went twice. first to make the appointment with the nurse (actually could do this by phone but i was too scared) and the second time to see the doctor. what accent is most popular in turkey - amrican or british?
uykusuz,

In all English courses, schools and such places, we use British accent, but people tend to use american accent much more. This is because people in Turkey regard the U.S.A as superior. British accent is the best as it is understandable easily.
miss rain,

in indonesia it is american accent which is more popular. we import everything from america, movies, TV series, etc. thus i always find british accent harder to understand because im not used to that. i speak american accent myself. btw what field of sociology do you specialise in?

Sorry, for jumping into your messages... I am from Malaysia. Currently doing my 1st degree on Information Technology & Management.
As our friend here, I am also facing a big problem in English. Sometimes, I tend to use broken english or MANGLISH. The M'sian student called it Malaysian English - which is not recognise & never exist at the first place. The existence just because of our tendency to use mixed english (english + malaysian mother tounge), including myself.
Formely our academic language medium is english. We straightly follow the British Education System. However, in early-80, the system was revamped due to pressure from the nationalisme group. When Anwar Ibrahim become the Minister of Education in that period, the government policy stated that all teaching must be in Bahasa Melayu. So all teaching was in B.Melayu until recently revised on 2003 (luckily!!!). Today, all critical subject such as math & science are taught in english.

I haven't specialised in any field of sociology yet. I'm a freshman and i have a superficial idea about sociology. Actually in Turkey, as i said before, there is a tendency to American Culture but nowadays this tendency seems to decrease due to the USA's Iraq policy.
jmanggah, is English used in high schools and universities? If it's used in high schools, it's unfortunate, in my opinion. There was an education system like your country in Turkey. Some high schools called Anatolian High Schools used to give education in English but today it is abandoned. Only some private high schools such as Robert College and Notre Dame De Sion French High School give education in different languages.

Hi! uykusuz,
Currently English is used at universities level and some high schools as well (mainly the Christian Missionary School). The Malaysian revert to this English medium about 2 years ago. So the current generation of Malaysian students including myself, are not that brilliant in English. Those student who just entering their formal education at kindergarten & primary schools are more fortunate. As I said earlier, at least the critical subjects like science & math are taught in English.
I have a sad story to share with you: Formerly (before 1980) the graduates from Malaya University in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is accredited by the British Medical Board. Their qualification is recognised oversea. Then, when teaching is done using Malaysia national language, the recognisition being revoked. The Malaysian doctors could not practise medicine beyond this country.
Our accent is followed the British English. We are Commonwealth Country. However, due to invasion of American products mainly through movies and the Microsoft Software, so both accents are acceptable now. This including writing, for example, color and colour, program & programme etc.

hi jmanggah. how are you? nice to hear from a friend from neighbouring countries
speaking about manglish, i went to a seminar a few years ago which discussed this manglish/singlish/spanglish thing and the participants decide that what we consider formal english shouldnt be limited only to british and american english. maybe just like mcdonald, english language should be adjusted specifically to the regions/countries where it is being used. what do you think?
for vellal, hi and welcome. can you tell us a bit about yourself?
jmanggah,
4 yr 270 days ago
Hi miss rain,
I do agree with you on that aspect. My worry is not so much on writing in english because there is convention on that matter, but the pronouncation. I worry that when I'm talking to non Manglish, they may not be able to understand me. How to avoid this potential problem?
Friends all over, if you have any suggestion or comment, please come forward.
Note:- I'm sorry for what happened to peoples at Nais recently. My moral support is with them and I wish that they can start a better life, then.
Regards.

hi deejay. nice to meet you. i'd gladly help if i could. see you soon :-)
and jmanggah, i did share your anxiety. i told you already about my fear of using phone in london. yet later i realised that people there talk in so many different accents and dialects but miraculously they seemed to understand each other well. so my conclusion is they get used to listening to different accents and they do try to connect. when i do the same, i began to overcome my problem. i guess the key is willingness to learn and good intention :-)

my advice is: practice, practice, and practice. just like a fitness programme, you have to start light but often. so, for example, if you are a beginner, listen to english programmes (films, talk show, radio, news, etc) for ten minutes every day. if you dont understand a word, dont worry. you need time to adjust your ears to the different tones, accent, stresses, etc. of course it's better if you could have the transcript of what you hear. as your hearing "muscles" grow, you could then prolong your "exercise" time. hope that helps. good luck ^^
