The Olympic swimmer's natatorial prowess was on full display as she won her fifth gold medal.

Does 'as' mean when or because? I know it's an conjunction, however, I am not sure which sense of the meanings is illustrated here.

 PS:  This is a good warning to all those ESL/EFLs who insist on using as to mean because-- it is always a poor word choice for that very reason.
