Hi,

This has been bothering me for quite a while. Could you please tell me what the function of the V-ing in the sentence is?

"She went swimming."

Since the verb 'go' is intransitive, could it have an object? The word swimming in the example sentence is a gerund isn't it? Is the sentence pattern S+V?

Thanks.

.
I think the structure, since its use is restricted (come/go + activity) is better considered as an idiomatic verb + participle.  Or we can look at it as intransitive verb + adverbial clause as complement, like I lay awake worrying all night or They sat playing cards till midnight.
