When people use the phrase "game plan", they don't necessarily mean a plan for a game, right? I believe it has the same meaning as 'plan' except the conversation is more casual as the speaker childishly refer to it as a game's plan.

Am I right?

Thanks!

Hi New2grammar,

I don't think that the phrase 'game plan' is necessarily confined to be used in conversations and informal situations.

game plan                                                                                                     (www.thefreedictionary.com)
n.
1. Sports The strategy devised before or used during an event.
2. A strategy for reaching an objective: "Harvey decided the best game plan was to stay loose" Cyra McFadden.

US game plan in Iraq questioned
But in the case of Iraq, the overall military game plan seems to have been set by the politicians, notably US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and a small group of senior Pentagon officials.

In this case, game plan means a plan for achieving success and the context is quite formal and serious.

As to whether they refer to a game in the sense of entertaining activities, sorry but I have not the foggiest notion. Perhaps the native speakers could help you with this one.  Smile [:)]

Best wishes,

PBF
