I know that your dog gave / has given birth to four puppies.

Which verb should be used?

'The question is,' said Humpty Dumpty, 'which is to be master-- that's all.'

Hello Micawber

I know that your dog gave / has given birth to four puppies recently.

In the earlier post, I left out the word 'recently'. My apologies for that.

Does the addition of 'recently' change the choice of the verb that should be used?

Either still sounds fine.

"Gave birth": you're thinking of the moment/day she gave birth.

"Has given birth": you're thinking of the four puppies that may be eating your slippers right now.

I'm glad to help, but I'm not a native! And please excuse my typos...

Thanks for the replies.

My dog, when she was still a puppy, bit my book on punctuation to pieces. Fortunately, my slippers were spared.
