What do you call a group of pupils/students who hold regular meetings at their school (but after their lessons, in the afternoon/evening), devoted to a particular subject/activity?

In the U.S. (where it's just math, not maths) we would call it a club; math club, drama club, etc. You might hear of a Ladies' Sewing Circle, but it sounds a bit old-fashioned.

Thanks for the answer.
Would 'circle' ONLY refer to sewing?

I think you could use 'circle' with other things - drama circle, poetry circle, etc. - - 'book clubs' are popular now, and I could imagine one being called a book circle, but club is definitely more common. (My guess is that "sewing circle" stayed that way instead of becoming "sewing club" because of the alliteration.) I think its more common to use "circle" to describe a more loosely defined group than a club - a "circle of friends," for instance. It could well be different in England - maybe someone British will offer their opinion.

I think in UK this would be "a society"
