Can I say,

John is a hard-working boy. He studies very hard.

(i) In the exam, he always gets the higher marks.

(ii) His ambition is to be a doctor when he grows up (one day). He studies hard because he wants to get well in the exam.

I think it should be "he always gets the highest marks" in the first sentence and in the second one, "he wants to do well in the exam".

I'd say "because he needs good grades to get into medical school." ( among other things)
