I have been teaching about good sportsmanship, and have come across a few interesting videos.  This one is from the 1950s.

What do you think of the style and tone?

Has sportsmanship changed over the last 50 years?

I only watched half way through, but yes, it is what good sportmanship is still today.  However there are a lot of bad sports around, and if they are elite sports people often that lets them get away with it.
As far as children go, I think sportsmanship has changed, if fact it has probably improved.  I can remember back 20+ years ago where it was common for parents or families of the children playing would be yelling all sorts of horrible things to the opposition.  It is very frowned upon today, I think.

Thanks, Jennie-

In the US, I think the trend toward poor sportsmanship has generally continued to worsen, or at least has not improved.   The video is terribly outmoded, but the principles are still good.  I have used this for teaching, and it elicits some discussion.  Students appreciate that they can understand most of the English, since the speaking speed is fairly slow.

Hi Gordon,
I love doing sport very much as well as watching the sport games all around the world. I think sportsmanship today has become a very rare scene. In my country, which is proposing for hosting 2018 - 2022 World Cup, sportsmanship has been obviously highlighted because of its bad track record in our domestic football league. The most difficult job to undertake is the referee. He must be totally ready for being argued or even hit by the player once he make a mistake. The players and supporters are seems not ready to take the result well, although the 'Fair Play' banner has always been widely spread at the game openings.
