Can I say,

(a) The salesgirl secretly set off the alarm, but the robbers got away/ escaped / ran away.

(b) Although the salesman set off the alarm, the masked men escaped successfully.

(b) Although the salesman set off the alarm, the masked men escaped successfully.

(a) "Ran away" doesn't necessarily imply that they ran free.

(b) I think "managed to escape" sounds much more natural.
