Hello friends, somoene could help me wit these espressions (in capital letters)I have read on the Miles's Autobiography?:

'Even the music critics had GOTTEN OFF MY BACK by this time and many of them were calling me "Charlie Parker's sucessor".'

'... because he was this big, jovial guy, a gentleman, and smart AS THEY COME.'
Thanks in advance, Jo.

gotten off my back - stopped criticising me

as X as they come - an idiom.  It means very X. So in this case, very smart.
