Please check out this sentence, & help me to make it grammatically correct. It's part of a short note that I am sending someone.

We knew then, that regardless of where our paths would take us, our connection was here to stay.

It looks O.K. as is, but perhaps the last clause is a little awkward. Here is an alternative;

We knew then, that regardless of where our paths would take us, our connection would never be severed.
