Yankee
Me, too.  I'm literally quaking in my boots. Embarrassed

OK, the word 'gridiron' can't be right.  That's basically only a noun, isn't it?

Gridiron??? I had to look it up! I'd probably better forget it, since I'm very unlikely to hear it again, let alone use it!!!

Nice to learn "be quaking in your boots," though. Thanks, Amy. Smile

Dang. Structure fit some of the clues, and grandstand seemed like it fit others - but it's too long.

Is it a word that somehow describes a collection of buildings, like a campus of some sort? Community... that sort of thing? Or is it another word for a specific type of building?

Does this relate to sustainabilty or the environment in some way?

Is it a word that somehow describes a collection of buildings >> Nearly. Mainly buildings, but not only (roads, squares, parks if any etc).

like a campus of some sort? >> No.

Or is it another word for a specific type of building? >> No. There are many buildings in it.

It's a very common word. I must have misled you somewhere...

Does this relate to sustainabilty or the environment in some way? >> Too many things can be related to sustainability & the environment. It's possible also to relate it to these (pollution, transport, etc), but it does not seem to me a straightforward connection.

Here's a quick recap. Smile

8 letters
only one vowel (other than "e") repeated twice
mainly AmE
you can break it into two 4-letter words, which differ only in one letter (not sure about the grammar, sorry!)
it can be noun, adjective and adverb (which does not end in -ly)

For the noun:
  • it's not created by nature
  • it's not a device
  • it's not portable
  • it's bigger than a laundry basket and than a typical house
  • you don't find it in a factory
  • its location doesn't change easily. If it does, it usually takes a great deal of time, and/or a lot of planning and work
  • it's usually associated with working and business.
  • there are usually lots of recreational opportunities in it in Europe
  • there are sometimes (but it's not really typical) major sports facilities in it
  • there are a lot of doors and windows in it
  • there are many buildings in it, but also roads, squares, parks ...
  • electricity is required for many of the activities which take place in it
  • many things move in it
  • a lot of things in it are made of metal but other materials are important, too
  • some parts are much higher than 6 metres (20 feets) above the ground level; some are lower than that

I just know I'm going to slap my forehead and say "ooohhhh!" once I finally learn what it is!

Amy, you've got to come help again. I'm so stuck.

Is it a synonym for village or town or city, something like that?

Is it something like a mall? (pall-mall?) a gymnasium? a theme park? a planetarium? an aquarium? a showroom?

Of course not!

But which one is kinda close?   Smile
