Is an hyphen responsible for turning the 7-letter word into an 8-letter one?

No idea ... I was thinking of birthday, before reading your latest clues ...

I guess we should focus on that. We said it's not a difference between BrE and AmE, so not "ou" spellings. Tanit asked if it's a hyphen that makes a difference.

I would ask if it is actually just a simple difference in spelling and not in pronunciation (ex: progam (AmE) / programme(BrE)) or if it's a completely different way to write it and pronounce it, but both words can be used to express the same concept... like account (7 letters) and username (8 letters).

No, there is no hyphen.

Here is a hint:
The eight-letter spelling contains a C, but the seven-letter spelling does not.

And here is another hint:
The word itself sounds quite similar to a woman's name -- especially when the final syllable is pronounced the "British way". Smile [:)]
