Hi,
The structure is someone pleads guilty (or not guilty) to a crime. eg

When he was charged with robbery, Tom pleaded not guilty.

Tom pleaded guilty to the murder of Mary.

Tom pleaded not guilty to the charge of careless driving.

Best wishes, Clive

The structure is:
Plead (not) guilty to (a crime)
The sentence is correct.

Other forms of plead:

He pleaded (plead) ignorance of the law.
He pleaded (plead) for mercy.

And after the trial is finished, you will see a different form:

Find (not) guilty of (a crime).

David was found not guilty of hacking Sarah Palin's email account.

Did you somehow find Clive's explanation incorrect?

No, Clive's reply was perfect. I was just giving more examples that fit the context.
